Bringing the EP to a close is "Body Talk," sonically taking the limelight for its unique musical palette that has been described as "if the Bee Gees were running from a Scooby-Doo swamp monster." The song tows the line between rock, pop, and funk, delivering a vibrant and eclectic sonic experience.
In an interview, Huffman revealed some behind-the-scenes secrets about the track's creation. He shared, "The main monster wubby subby sound is actually a cello that I manipulated with a few different filters and ran through the Soundtoys decapitator. I've been writing and working on these songs for a few years now, and this is the one I find myself listening to the most. It also SLAAAPS live!"
To fully appreciate the depth of Huffman's musical journey, let's rewind to his early beginnings. At the age of 14, Jake Huffman and his band McLovins posted a cover of Phish's "You Enjoy Myself" on YouTube, recorded in his parent's basement in Connecticut. Overnight, the video went viral, sparking a rabid following of fans from around the world. From bars to clubs, theatres to major music festivals, Jake became a fixture on the rock music scene, sharing the stage with legendary acts like Blink-182, Foster the People, BB King, and The Flaming Lips.
In 2015, Jake caught the attention of Emmy, Grammy, and Tony award-winning producer and composer Bill Sherman, known for his work on Hamilton, In The Heights, and Sesame Street. Sherman connected McLovins with Glee producer Michael Novick, and together, they produced the band's self-titled "Red" album. The critical praise for that record was immense, with XPN Radio Programming Director and DJ Bruce Warren describing their fusion of jazz and yacht rock arrangements as a shining achievement.
Jake's journey didn't stop there. He made a significant impact on television as a composer and lyricist for Sesame Street, penning numerous songs for acclaimed artists like Ed Sheeran and Leon Bridges. He also led the house band on ESPN's SportsNation for a season, leaving his mark on the small screen.
In 2019, Jake felt the need to evolve his sound further and enlisted the help of producing wizard Andy Seltzer, recognized for his work with artists like Maggie Rogers and Chelsea Cutler. The result was Jake's solo project debut, which premiered on NPR's World Cafe in October 2019.
Unfortunately, Jake's plans for touring were cut short by the global pandemic in 2020. However, he utilized the time to work in his own studio, writing new music, honing his sound, and developing his skills as a producer. He released several singles, started a popular series on YouTube called "Jake Huffman's Sunday Mixdown," and even became a certified music producer from Berklee College of Music.
Now, with his upcoming EP "Younger," Jake Huffman continues to deliver an exceptional musical experience. The track "Body Talk" stands out as an anthem of creative energy, exploring the polarizing nature of the world we live in. Huffman's powerful vocals rise above crashing choruses, soaring melodies, and the alt-rock-infused rhythms that have become his signature. The song captures the essence of the 20s, blending his rock roots with a sound that is truly unique and captivating.
Jake Huffman's "Body Talk" is a culmination of his remarkable journey as an artist, showcasing his talent for songwriting and fantastic production. It's a must-listen for music enthusiasts craving a fusion of genres and a taste of genuine artistry.
