LA-based indie rock artist Paper Citizen, led by Claire Gohst, is set to release the poignant and heartfelt "American Song" on June 28, 2024. With crisp vocals, intimate lyrics, spacious guitars, and organic rhythms, "American Song" is a touching tribute to the evolution of American music.
Claire Gohst, the creative force behind Paper Citizen, brings a rich background to her music. Born and raised in Singapore, Claire's musical journey began with classical training in piano and violin. She taught her first violin lesson at 16 and soon after decided to pursue music full-time, performing across Singapore with her first band, Zsa+Claire. In 2013, Claire moved to Boston to deepen her understanding of American music and recording arts, which greatly influenced her unique sound.
"American Song" reflects Claire's deep appreciation for US music and her nostalgia for the changing landscape of live music over the past decade. The track is characterized by its lyrical intimacy and the blending of Claire's crisp vocals with spacious guitars and rhythmic authenticity. This single captures the essence of Paper Citizen’s sound—a fusion of indie rock’s raw energy with the delicate, introspective quality of bedroom and lo-fi pop.
Paper Citizen has been gaining recognition since its inception. Claire's move to Boston led to the formation of this indie rock project, resulting in a sound that melds her Singaporean roots with American musical influences. The project’s first EP received critical acclaim, and now, with "American Song," Paper Citizen continues to evolve and captivate audiences.
Currently working on their second EP, "Distraction," Paper Citizen draws inspiration from personal experiences and societal observations. Themes such as cultural transitions, love, heartbreak, loneliness, and the complexities of modern interconnectedness are woven into their music. This upcoming release promises to be a deeply personal and reflective body of work.
Claire Gohst's journey with Paper Citizen has been marked by significant milestones, including being voted Deli Magazine’s “New England Emerging Artist of the Month” and nominations in the New England Music Awards and Boston Music Awards. As Paper Citizen releases "American Song," it marks another step in their musical evolution, inviting listeners to share in the nostalgia and appreciation for American music.
